WWF Sunday Night Heat (January 10, 1999)

Original Airdate: January 10, 1999

From San Antonio, Texas; Your Hosts are Kevin Kelly and Shane McMahon

The Corporation are out, and Vince McMahon promises ‘dire consequences’ - for Mankind tomorrow night, but for local hero Shawn Michaels right here tonight. And speaking of San Antonio’s heroes, Vince spots Jose Lothario in the crowd, and summons him into the ring. Vince tries to make peace with Shawn through Jose (since Michaels has power over McMahon’s Royal Rumble schemes), but Lothario hits Vince with a ‘no way Jose,’ so the Corporation beat him down. And, since Vince can’t punish Shawn, he’ll take it out on Triple H instead. Well, that sounds familiar

Backstage, Michael Cole catches up with Al Snow and Blue Meanie, with Meanie promising to back Al up against the Brood

Christian v Al Snow: Snow tackles him for mounted punches right away, as Blue Meanie joins the commentary team. Christian manages a matslam, and he adds a gourdbuster for two, as we get a really weird deep zoom angle for this. Snow fights Christian off with trapping headbutts, but he wastes time, and Christian dropkicks him out of the ring. Christian follows with a dive, and he rolls Snow in for a cross corner whip, as Goldust shows up to steal Head. That draws Meanie after him, and the distraction allows Christian to hit an inverted DDT at 2:09. This never found its footing. DUD

Earlier today, Cole caught up with WWF Women’s Champion Sable, out on the town. Sable looks so different in normal clothes. She accepts Luna’s challenge for a title match at the Royal Rumble

The Glover Slam of the Week is Rock putting Mankind through a table on RAW

Lion's Den Match: Owen Hart v Steve Blackman: Dan Severn acts as the special guest referee. Kind of a weird gimmick match to book with zero promotion. Blackman attacks, and suplexes him into the age, then grabs a hold, but Owen fights free. Owen tries a hold, it goes nowhere. Owen with a vertical suplex, followed by a backbreaker, and he tries a leg-feed enzuigiri, but Blackman ducks. That allows Blackman a Muta lock, but Owen doesn’t submit. They slug it out, with Owen going low to win the exchange. Piledriver, but Blackman blocks, and pounds on Owen with fists. He feeds Hart the cage, and a bodyslam sets up a headbutt drop. Blackman throws Owen into the cage again, but a whip into it gets reversed. That allows Hart a spinheel kick, and a suplex allows Owen some mounted punches. Blackman fights him off with a dropkick, but a charge misses, and Hart uses a belly-to-belly suplex. Side suplex, but Blackman blocks, and smashes Hart’s face into the cage. Steve with another dropkick, but Hart uses a drop-toehold to send Steve into the cage. Hart grabs the dragon sleeper, so Blackman tries running up the side of the cage, but Owen slams him to block. That allows Owen to apply the Sharpshooter, but Blackman reverses it! Severn goes to check… but then opts to nail Steve instead at 5:21, so I guess the match is thrown out. Like most of these Lion’s Den matches, this was interesting. **

Backstage, Blackman takes his frustrations out on some furniture

The Headbangers v Golga and Kurrgan: These guys are still fighting?! This has to be the longest non-feud in history! Golga with a running sitdown splash at 1:44. DUD

Outside, Blackman attacks Severn and Hart out by their car

The 10-10-220 Rewind is Steve Austin hitting Rock with a chair on RAW

Cole narrates a video package on Mankind’s journey to the WWF Title

Backstage, Vince schemes with Big Boss Man

Lion's Den Match: Big Boss Man v Triple H: So, this is HHH’s punishment. Despite that, HHH charges in, and manages to strike first. He chokes Boss Man with a t-shirt, and feeds Boss Man the cage a few times. HHH with a DDT, so Shane leaves the commentary table, and throws Boss Man the nightstick. That allows Boss Man to tee off, and once Hunter is down, Shane jumps into the cage to unload as well. They deliver an unanswered beating for a while, until the rest of DX run out. Kane cuts them off, and everyone just kind of brawls until the show ends. No bell, or any announced winner, so we’ll just call it a no contest at 3:00. DUD

BUExperience: The Hart/Blackman match is interesting, the rest just felt like a commercial for RAW.
