Original Airdate: March 7, 1987 (taped February 16)
From New Haven, Connecticut; Your Hosts are Vince McMahon, Bruno Sammartino, and Jesse Ventura
Mary Hart is excited to be at WrestleMania III
Junkyard Dog v Pete Doherty: Bruno is increasingly just sitting silently as Vince and Jesse do the bulk of the talking. JYD with the scoop powerslam at 2:16. DUD
Gene Okerlund is in the studio for Update, giving us a look at Jake Roberts hanging out with Alice Cooper in anticipation of WrestleMania
WrestleMania III ad
Demolition v Tommy Sharpe and Mike Luca: Demolition is still with Johnny Valiant here, which continues to feel off. Demolition put this away at 1:43. DUD
Gene catches up with Adrian Adonis and Hercules, who are both excited that Roddy Piper is on his way into retirement
Bob Uecker catches up with Mary Hart, and hopes to win her affections by gifting her a fur coat to wear in case it's cold in Pontiac
Ricky Steamboat v Terry Gibbs: Randy Savage split screens in here, and promises that George Steele standing in Ricky’s corner at WrestleMania will be a nonfactor. Steamboat picks up the win via pinfall at 3:22. ¼*
Gene catches up with Uecker, who is very excited to see a Little Beaver
Gene catches up with Don Muraco and Bob Orton, who are ready for the Can-Am’s at WrestleMania
Jim Duggan vignette
Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff v SD Jones and Brad Rheighans: The Killer Bees split screen in here, ahead of their match with Sheik and Volkoff at WrestleMania. The announcers talk about the Hair v Hair stipulation for the Piper/Adonis match, which I still don’t quite understand. I mean, I get it, but they just kind of shoehorned it in, without any real build. Sheik puts Jones away with the camel clutch at 3:05. I’m surprised Jones took the L there. DUD
Speaking of Piper, he hosts Piper’s Pit with guests Andre the Giant and Bobby Heenan. Captain Lou Albano comes out to confront his former charge, telling him that he’s disgraced himself and his family, but Andre growls at him, and chases him off. Andre looks incredibly menacing here. No other wrestling giant has ever come close
Gene is in the control center for the WrestleMania III Report
The Hart Foundation v Jim Powers and Jerry Allen: The WWF Tag Team title is not on the line here. Danny Davis split screens in here, not at all worried about having to step in the ring with Tito Santana and the British Bulldogs at WrestleMania. The Foundation pick up the win at 1:44. DUD
Gene catches up with Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper, who are now the best of friends
BUExperience: Not much this week, but the WrestleMania build continues to… build.
