ECW Eastern Championship Wrestling (September 14, 1993)

Original Airdate: September 14, 1993

Your Hosts are Jay Sulli and Tod Gordon in the studio

Tod immediately announces that Shane Douglas has won the ECW Title, and will defend against Sandman in four days at UltraClash I. No mention of how he actually WON the title, probably because Tito Santana walked out on the promotion, and they just awarded it to Shane instead

Next Tod announces that Kevin Sullivan will replace Eddie Gilbert on the show, tagging with Abdullah the Butcher against Terry Funk and Stan Hansen

ECW Pennsylvania State Title Match: Tommy Cairo v Tony Stetson: From Philadelphia Pennsylvania on August 7 1993. Cairo with a backdrop and a pair of armdrags to start, so Tony bails, as the announcers get into a weird analysis of Stetson’s body. Cairo with a vertical suplex, and a belly-to-belly version gets the champion two. Cairo dumps him to the outside, but Tony fights him off with a bodyslam on the way back inside. He dives with a flying legdrop for two, but Cairo pops up, and makes a comeback. Spinkick sends Stetson to the outside, but Tony drags Cairo out with him, and feeds him the guardrail. Stetson dives with a kneedrop from the apron, and he whacks Cairo with a chair for good measure. Inside, Stetson tries a clothesline, but Cairo has the same idea, and it’s a double knockout. They stagger up, and Tony corner whips him, but the referee gets bumped as they collide. That allows Hunter Q. Robbins III to put Tony on top at 5:52 to make Tony the second champion. And the final, as they abandoned it shortly after this. Weak finish, but both guys were trying here. ¾*

We take a look back at the segment from a few weeks ago that introduced all the participants for the intergender battle royal at UltraClash. This leads to yet another announcement of a worker that’s bailed on the promotion, as Freddie Gilbert (who the match was sort of being built around) is gone, and, uh, Jay Sulli will be taking his place

We take a look back at the Headhunters match against Eddie Gilbert and Dark Patriot

Super Destroyer I is not going to lose his mask. This dude’s voice really doesn’t match his body

Super Destroyer II at least sounds like a bad ass

We take a look back at the Headhunters going to a no-contest with Miguel Perez Jr and Mr. Danger a few weeks ago

Sulli and Gordon wrap up with some final hard sell for UltraClash. “The greatest card in Philadelphia history,” notes Sulli. What was with 1993 and promoting stuff as the ‘greatest ever’ before it even happened?

BUExperience: None of this really made me want to see UltraClash, but at least we got footage of the title change for the record books.
