WCW Monday Nitro (January 18, 1999)

Original Airdate: January 18, 1999

From Columbus, Ohio; Your Hosts are Tony Schiavone and Mike Tenay, with Larry Zbyszko (first half) and Bobby Heenan (second half)

Backstage, the Four Horsemen are looking for Wolfpac blood tonight, after the beating they gave to David Flair last night

The Wolfpac arrive in a limousine, still laughing up the attack, but the Horsemen run out, and Flair smashes the window with a tire iron before they can drive off. With them gone for now, Ric Flair storms out to the ring, with Gene Okerlund in tow. Flair is still fuming, and as President, he’s using his power to get Hollywood Hulk Hogan in the ring at SuperBrawl IX. But that’s not soon enough, and he wants Eric Bischoff tonight. Bischoff is out to laugh the challenge off, so Flair offers to put his hair on the line. Didn’t then already settle all of this a while back, with Flair beating Bischoff? Anyway, David runs out, and says he’ll fight Bischoff tonight, and apparently it’s on. And you know it is, because David rips off his shirt, which is the wrestling version of shaking hands on it

Nitro Girls

Booker T v Chris Jericho: They posture, and Booker wins a reversal sequence with a spinkick for two. Jericho tries a dropkick, but misses, and that allows Booker a catapult into the corner, then a side suplex on the rebound for two. Booker goes to an armbar, so Jericho goes to the eyes, and throws a few chops. Clothesline, but Booker ducks, and nails Jericho with a jumping forearm. Harlem sidekick, but Jericho ducks, and Booker goes over the top. Chris is on him with a springboard bodypress on the floor, and Jericho adds a gourdbuster out there. Chris with a hanging vertical suplex for one on the way back in, following an arrogant cover. Chris takes it into the corner for chops, and a bootchoke, but Booker manages a sunset flip for two. Chris cuts him off, and uses a snapmare to ground him in a chinlock. Booker escapes, but a criss cross allows Jericho a knee, and Booker falls out of the ring again. Chris follows to choke him with a cable, and a flying forearm connects on the way inside. Jericho adds a senton splash for two, and he holds a backbreaker into a submission hold. Jericho uses a bodyslam for two, and a corner whip follows, but the charge in gets blocked. That allows Booker to connect with a clothesline, but Jericho cuts him off again. Chris with another bodyslam to set up a flying splash, but Booker gets a boot up to block. That allows Booker to throw the axekick, and he fights off another cutoff attempt with a spinebuster into a somersault cradle for two. Jericho shoots back with a flapjack, but Booker pops up with the Harlem sidekick. That allows Booker to go up with a missile dropkick at 9:47. These two had tremendous chemistry, making this look effortless. ** ½

Okerlund brings JJ Dillon out, with Dillon announcing that he has suspended Scott Dickinson for his recent actions

Backstage, Okerlund catches up with Rey Mysterio Jr, who still loves his mask, but doesn’t fear Lex Luger

Eric Bischoff v David Flair: If Bischoff loses, he gets his head shaved. But, if Flair loses, Ric Flair gets his head shaved. Flair stupidly gets in Bischoff’s face without any sort of guarding, and Eric kicks him in the head. Yeah, well, he had that one coming. Bischoff pounds him down, but the referee breaks it up, and David just kind of gets up, punches Bischoff in the head, and pins him at 1:15. David reveals that he had a roll of coins in his hand (which the replay reveals was passed to him by referee Randy Anderson, in a nice bit), and the Horsemen are out to do the headshaving. Hilarious bit here, as they shave his hair, and the short hairs are all completely gray. This somehow boarded negative stars, despite being a minute long. But, at least they pair off the stipulations. DUD

Backstage, Jericho corners JJ Dillon, demanding that Saturn continue to wear a dress, since the contract said he has to do it all the time, not just once at Souled Out

Konnan is out, and pissed at the Wolfpac for going in their new direction. He also wants lunch, from the sound of things

WCW World Tag Team Title Tournament First Round Match: The Faces of Fear v Mike Enos and Bobby Duncum Jr: The brackets for this tournament are the least transparent of any tournament I’ve ever followed. They’re so muddy that I’m not even completely sure what round this is, and the announcers are no help whatsoever. They trade off, and we split screen to the Wolfpac arriving at the building. They storm right down to the ring, and attack everyone for the no contest at 6:53. Afterwards, Hollywood Hogan cuts a promo on Flair, accepting the match for SuperBrawl along the way. I thought Flair already booked it, not made a challenge. Anyway, it’s happening, and Hulk full on promises that Flair will ‘die.’ Several times. Talk about paying off stipulations. ¼*

Goldberg/Scott Hall/Bam Bam Bigelow hype video. This was just random still images of each guy. Terrible

Disco Inferno v Wrath: The announcers debate whether or not Flair wants to even become WCW World champion again. Have any of them even met Ric Flair? Wrath dominates early on, and he beats Disco in the corner, as Scott Hall wanders down. Wrath misses a charge, allowing Disco a swinging neckbreaker, then a series of clotheslines. Disco with a 2nd rope pointed elbowdrop for two, and he keeps Wrath grounded in a chinlock. Wrath uses a side suplex to escape, and he corner whips Disco, but misses a charge in again. That allows Disco to clip the leg, and he stays on the part. Piledriver, but Wrath backdrops him to block, and throws a shoulderblock from there. Wrath with a standing dropkick to send Disco to the outside, and Wrath follows to beat on him out there. Wrath with a slingshot backelbow on the way back in, so Hall tries a distraction. That allows Disco to recover, but Wrath drops him with a uranage before he can get much in. That draws Hall in, but Wrath takes him out. The distraction allows Disco to recover, however, and he delivers a jawbreaker at 5:28. This was pretty solid. *

Nitro Girls, but Scott Steiner interrupts to sexually harass them a little bit. Tony offers an apology to every one of them, by name

Scott Steiner v Saturn: The WCW Television title is not on the line here, and Scott doesn’t even bother bringing the belt with him. Saturn is in the dress, and Scott is quick to make fun, so Saturn beats him until he leaves the ring. Saturn continues sticking and moving, but Scott clobbers him, and turns the tide. Steiner goes to work, and the camel clutch ends it at 6:05. Dull. ¼*

Nitro Girls

Kevin Nash and Lex Luger are out to respond to Konnan’s rant from earlier

Backstage, Scott Steiner busts into the Nitro Girls’ dressing room to continue his harassment campaign

Juventud Guerrera v Psychosis: They move around in the early going, and Psychosis gets control, holding a chinlock. Juvi tries to escape, so Psychosis drops him with a matslam, and a flying dropkick for two. Juvi tries making a comeback, but gets cut off, and Psychosis finishes with a flying legdrop at 10:33. I expected more here. ½*

Another shitty Goldberg/Scott Hall/Bam Bam Bigelow hype video

Lex Luger v Rey Mysterio Jr: Luger offers to let Rey forfeit if he surrenders the LWO shirt and his mask, but Mysterio isn’t into it. Lex responds by kicking him in the stomach, and he goes to work. Rey manages to stick and move on him, and he delivers a bronco buster, ahead of a slingshot moonsault for two. Lex fires back with a powerslam, as Kevin Nash makes his way out. Luger with a hanging vertical suplex, and a press-slam, as he toys with Mysterio. He goes for the mask, but that gets Rey fired up, so Nash just comes in for the DQ at 5:05. Afterwards, it’s beating time, but Konnan makes the save with a chair. ¼*

Clips of Diamond Dallas Page at the opening of the Nitro Grill in Las Vegas Nevada

Backstage, Steiner corners Kimberly, trying to proposition her

Triple Threat Match: Bill Goldberg v Scott Hall v Bam Bam Bigelow: Bam Bam runs in to attack Hall in the aisle to kick start things, and he and Goldberg work Scott over in the ring from there. Hall ends up on the outside, allowing Bam Bam to start hammering Goldberg, but Bill fights him off in the corner. Goldberg looks to hook him, but Hall saves, and works with Bam Bam to pound Bill into the corner. Goldberg spears them both, and he hits Hall with the jackhammer, but the Wolfpac are out for the DQ at 2:52. That draws Flair out, and he chases Hogan out of the building to close the show. ¼*

BUExperience: I didn’t love everything about this show, and, as always, it was too long… but it was better than the weak RAW it ran against this week.
