WWF Prime Time Wrestling (August 24, 1987)

Original Airdate: August 24, 1987

Your Hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan from the studio

The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers v The Shadows: From Madison Wisconsin on August 4. Joined in progress, and the crowd is dead. We’ve got Lanny Poffo and Don Muraco on commentary here again this week, which continues to astonish me. The Brothers with a combo at 5:49 shown of 6:24. Why even bother clipping? DUD

One Man Gang v Outback Jack: From July 18 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, with Jack subbing for Chavo Guerrero. Joined in progress, as they posture. Jack uses speed to get control, and he cranks on the arm. He can’t hold control, however, and Gang puts him away with a gourdbuster at 5:24 shown of 6:04. Again, with bother cutting the match down for that? DUD

Jesse Ventura catches up with Johnny Valiant, and breaks the news that he’s out of the running for Bam Bam Bigelow’s contract

Craig DeGeorge brings Paul Orndorff and Bobby Heenan out so Bobby can have Paul tell everyone that Rick Rude has the better body. Paul doesn’t go along with it, and gets furious with Heenan. Wait, they turned him babyface again so soon? He went back and forth a bunch during a two year period. So, Orndorff fires Heenan, and immediately introduces Oliver Humperdink as his new manager. Talk about a downgrade

Mr. Washington v Chris Curtis: From the August 23 1987 episode of Wrestling Challenge (taped August 5) in LaCrosse Wisconsin. This is supposed to be Ted DiBiase against Curtis, but he thinks the match is beneath him, and pays Washington $500 to ‘do (his) sweating for him.’ That’s a great gimmick! But then Curtis ends up pinning Washington anyway at 1:06, thus embarrassing DiBiase. DUD

Gene Okerlund catches up with Randy Savage to discuss the future

Junkyard Dog v Ron Bass: From Madison on August 4. Dog manages a bodyslam right away, but a headbutt drop misses. That allows Bass to try an elbowdrop, but Dog dodges, and they’re at a stalemate. Bass manages to get him down, and Ron hammers, as the crowd chants for ‘JYD.’ Bass works him over in very dull fashion, and a bodyslam sets up a kneedrop for two. He makes the mistake of trying a headbutt, allowing Dog to turn it around, They spill to the outside for a slugfest, but get too jazzy, and we have a double countout at 8:08. DUD

Nikolai Volkoff v Jerry Allen: From LaCrosse on August 5. We’re getting dark match squashes on this show now? Volkoff with a press-backbreaker at 6:55. This was insanely long for what it was. DUD

Rick Martel v Barry Horowitz: From the August 15 Superstars of Wrestling (taped August 4) in Madison. The Islanders split screen in here, promising to help Martel join Tom Zenk on the outside soon. Martel at 2:28. Afterwards, the Islanders show up in person, and they corner Rick for a beating, but Tito Santana makes the save. DUD

Slick hypes up his performance on the Piledriver album

Butch Reed v Jim Evans: From the August 22 Superstars (taped August 4) in Madison. Vince McMahon is really, really disappointed that Reed hurt old Superstar Billy Graham. I mean, that whole posedown was a trap! Reed with an arrogant pin at 2:34. Afterwards, Reed calls Graham out, and here comes Superstar! On Superstars! Wild. Billy comes in and thumps him good, and Butch just kind of hightails it out of there. Not the best encounter, but at least it was an encounter, instead of just having Billy split screen in, or something. DUD

Brutus Beefcake v Harley Race: From LaCrosse on August 5. Beefcake knocks him around early on, with Race bumping and selling all over the place. Beefcake ends up losing a slugfest, which allows Race a swinging neckbreaker for two. Beefcake manages to win another slugfest, so Race tries a suplex, but Beefcake counters to the sleeper! Beefcake seems to have it won, so Bobby Heenan hops onto the apron with a distraction. Brutus takes the bait, allowing Harley to recover with a high knee at 12:04. Dull stuff, though I appreciated Harley’s bumping. ¼*

BUExperience: Just terrible.
