CHAIR SHOTS AND MISCARRIAGES OF JUSTICE
WWE BACKLASH 2016
BY: DOUBLE M
Shane O’ Mac and the Leader of The Yes Movement
toast the first all Smackdown PPV on the only day worthy of such a historically
historic event: this blog writer’s birthday! Cake will be passed
around- JBL keep passing so everyone get’s a piece. No that doesn’t mean
sneak a taste of frosting pass! Anywho Smackdown crowns its Women’s and
Tag Team champs while the IC and WWE title’s are also on the line. Just
like the good ole’ days. Memories…..
BEST MATCH: Dean Ambrose and AJ Styles. The
Dude and the New-Older Face That Now Runs The Place closed things out nicely.
We’ve seen AJ step his game up since he no longer has The Club to lean on
and this was no exception. Styles looked like the veteran with his
“planned chaos” attack while The Lunatic Fringe kept Styles on his toes with
his barroom brawl mentality. We saw great creativity from both with
Ambrose dumping a monster facebuster and a catch into a hellacious backbreaker,
not to be out done was Styles jamming then landing on Ambrose’s leg.
Speaking of facebusters I can’t imagine either guy’s face had to be
feeling good after bouncing off the video posts. Even JBL found out
up-close just how hostile this match got. Solid heel ending with the low
blow after referee Mike Kiota was knocked down on Ambrose for the win sets us
up nicely for a re-match at No Mercy. A return to the Ambrose Asylum
perhaps…..
WORST MATCH: Women’s Title 6-Pack Challenge.
Clumsy, botched moves, just not the level the The Universe has come to
expect at this point from the Women’s division. I still can’t figure out
what Naomi was trying to pull off on Natalya with that bridge. Also
what’s with everyone being thrown out of the ring? I get it the less
people you have to deal with the better, but seriously it looked like the
ladies didn’t get the message they had to pin/ gain submission to win.
Maybe there was something in Cosmopolitan or Women’s Health. “1000
ways to throw someone out of the ring and how it helps volumize your hair”,
“opponent tossing and how it boosts your sex drive”, “shred inches off your
waist by hurling people out of the ring”.
MOST DISAPPOINTING MOMENT: Heath Slater’s
promo. Just a bumbling blah, blah, blah nonsensical waste of oxygen.
Can’t imagine why neither brand wanted to draft him. In ring was
pretty good but good grief does he need an image makeover. Blah my ears
are bleeding shut the hell up!
BEST MOMENT: Maryse’s interference. If
you’re looking for something to watch on the Network I highly recommend the
special on the ring managers. Jimmy Hart, Bobby “The Brain”, Mr. Fuji,
Cpt. Lou, Paul Bearer, Paul Heyman, Sensational [or Scary] Sherry the list goes
on. It’s a lost art, the ability of the ring manager to not only promote
their superstar but every so often steal a win. Maryse did just that for
her man The Miz with a shot of perfume in the eyes of Wanna-be Shawn Michaels
[aka Dolph Ziggler]. WWE had some dud endings at Summerslam but this was
one that played perfectly into the match, it’s story, and complimented The Miz’
surprisingly fierce in ring performance. The old school wrestling fan in
me is a happy camper, a true miscarriage of justice if there ever was one.
PARTING SHOTS:
-How about that warm-up match between Baron
Corbin and Apollo Crews? Yes we do watch the pre-show, if you didn’t I
recommend giving it a look-see.
-You’d think the person delivering a double
powerbomb would be the least affected. Except in Natalya’s case.
-Randy Orton said a dirty word!!!
-Digging The Usos new attitude. Not so
much the white shoes but they play nasty nicely.
-Interesting The Miz being accused a coward [aka
chicken] a week after wearing a chicken suit…..
-Speaking of The Usos new attitude, how close
was Jay to going after the Bayley fan?
-Disappointing ending with Bray Wyatt losing to
Kane. Ok it might build the Orton angle, but seriously Wyatt is way
overdue for a legit win.
Angry Rating Scale: 7. With the
exception of the IC and WWE title’s the event was a bore. The women’s
match was a mess, the first tag match meh and the second tolerable, Bray Wyatt
and Kane had it’s moments but The Big Red Machine is clearly wearing down,
Heath Slater’s hillbilly country bumpkin angle is beyond annoying. There
is promise on some interesting storylines so we’ll see what comes about come No
Mercy.
