WWF Superstars (September 25, 1993)

Original Airdate: September 25, 1993 (taped August 31)

From Grand Rapids, Michigan; Your Hosts are Vince McMahon, Randy Savage, and Jerry Lawler

Mr. Perfect arrives at the building, promising to back 1-2-3 Kid up tonight

Adam Bomb v Kevin Kruger: Even after all these years, it’s hard for me to believe that Johnny Polo and Raven are the same person. Adam with the powerbomb at 2:29. DUD

Joe Fowler is in the studio with Face to Face with guests Irwin R Schyster, Bam Bam Bigelow, and Luna Vachon. Irwin is still upset that Razor Ramon turned down Ted DiBiase’s offer to clean his toilets. Especially since it was tax free income. Meanwhile, Bigelow is ranting about Randy Savage being a ‘has-been’ since he may be a former world champion, but that was a long time ago. It’s been a year! Fowler is pretty terrible here, especially compared to Gene Okerlund. It’s no wonder he didn’t last long. And speaking of ‘didn’t last long,’ the promo here led to exactly three house show matches between Bigelow and Savage. Three

Razor Ramon v Brian Costello: Transitioning from feuding with DiBiase (which he won clean, by the way), to feuding with his lackey feels like a huge step down for Ramon. It was really a lucky break for him that Shawn Michaels ended up leaving the promotion, opening the door for him to pick up the Intercontinental title. Razor’s Edge puts this away at 3:07. The sound sweetening was really out of control here. DUD

Gorilla Monsoon is in the control center with Update, taking a look back at the Quebecers winning the WWF Tag Team title from the Steiner Brothers via disqualification on Monday Night RAW

Bastion Booger v Todd Becker: Savage takes veiled shots at Hulk Hogan while making fun of Booger, which is a choice. I still don’t really get the appeal of this character. Like, I get that he’s a lower card JTTS heel, but his gimmick is so off putting that you can’t even really slot him in a program with anyone, because even if the guy destroys him, he looks worse for even having the interaction. Booger with his sitdown splash at 1:49. DUD

WWF Unbelievable ad

1-2-3 Kid v Jack Reno: Kid has Mr. Perfect in his corner for this, since apparently he needs protection to handle jobbers now. I mean, I do like that they still sell him as something of an underdog, but that’s going too far now. Kid with a magistral cradle at 2:14. Why does Perfect seem so heelish here? ¼*

Ludvig Borga is out somewhere, ranting about pollution. He should have jumped to WCW, could have done a Captain Planet crossover

Tatanka v Barry Horowitz: Barry is a very energetic jobber, and makes Tatanka look really great here. Enhancement talent is an artform all its own, and a very underappreciated one at that. Tatanka with a Samoan drop at 2:24. ¼*

Fowler is in the studio with another Face to Face, with guests WWF Intercontinental Champion Shawn Michaels, Diesel, and 1-2-3 Kid. Apparently, a match for the title has been signed between Michaels and Kid. Hopefully Mr. Perfect won’t be too busy to hold Kid’s hand on his way to the ring that night

The Smoking Gunns v Tom Stone and Dan Rubins: Vince makes a point of putting over Rubins here, which feels very odd. The Gunns with their neat backdrop/piledriver combo at 2:17. The Gunns look good, but they’ve got nothing going on. They do squashes all the time, but they’ve got nothing in the way of an actual program to sink their teeth into. Which was kind of a problem throughout the promotion during this period, actually. ¼*

Boni Blackstone brings WWF Champion Yokozuna, Jim Cornette, and Mr. Fuji out to remind us that Lex Luger will not get a rematch. And, in fact, there are no challengers left for Yokozuna to beat. That results in the lights dying, and when they come back up, Undertaker and Paul Bearer are standing on the podium with Yoko and his entourage. Huge pop for that, and rightly so, it was pretty cool. So Undertaker makes an official challenge to Yokozuna for the title, and while the champ doesn’t respond, he doesn’t back down either. Good segment

BUExperience: The closing segment was really strong, but everything else was the opposite this week.
