WWF Superstars (October 9, 1993)

Original Airdate: October 9, 1993 (taped August 31)

From Grand Rapids, Michigan; Your Hosts are Vince McMahon, Randy Savage, and Jerry Lawler

Men on a Mission v Damien Demento and Anthony Green: The announcers debating what Columbus Day means to them provides some interesting moments here, particularly when Lawler tells the other two that if the country had ‘better immigration laws’ they wouldn’t be here to all. I’m kind of surprised to see Demento in a full-on jobber role, but this was actually his last televised appearance, so I guess it makes sense. He’d already worked his last house show match back in September, so this was his last appearance of any sort in the promotion. MOM with a rocket launcher on Green at 3:24. ¼*

Gorilla Monsoon is in the control center with Update, and this week he wants to discuss the ongoing rivalry between Bret Hart and Jerry Lawler. It’s a shame the blowoff at Survivor Series didn’t work out, because they really did a phenomenal job of building the angle up

Adam Bomb v Mitch Bishop: Lawler notes that the Hart Family were some of the original settlers in the US, but ran away to Canada as soon as the first war happened. Bomb with a slingshot clothesline at 1:40. Not much going on with this one. Weird bit, as Bomb gives him a powerbomb after the match, instead of finishing with it like he usually does. ¼*

Joe Fowler is in the studio with Face to Face with guests Irwin R Schyster and Razor Ramon, and IRS is still fuming about Razor costing him a match to PJ Walker. Boy, that win sure didn’t translate into anything for him like it did for 1-2-3 Kid or Barry Horowitz. Also, how many of those ‘jobber fluke beats star’ angles was Ramon involved in over the years? And in multiple promotions, too

Mr. Perfect v Red Tyler: Vince keeps putting over how well Savage did in the Intercontinental title battle royal, which feels like kind of a dick move considering how badly Macho wanted to work. Perfectplex finishes at 2:38. DUD

Survivor Series ad

Boni Blackstone brings Bam Bam Bigelow and Luna Vachon out to fume about Doink the Clown’s ‘prank’ last week. Hard to believe Blackstone was only 28 at this point, she looks at least 40

Well Dunn v Virgil and Jerry Fox: Speaking of guys getting the jobber treatment, Virgil continues to plummet down the card. He does get to dump Steven Dunn over the top though, and actually dominates him for a bit, so at least he’s going down swinging. Fox has less luck, however, and Timothy Well pins him at 3:20. ¼*

Undertaker v Rod Bell: Even as a kid I never quite ‘got’ Undertaker. I was a fan the way I was a fan of all the babyfaces, but always found his act kind of boring, and didn’t really see him as a top star. Chokeslam finishes at 1:33. No tombstone? How lazy can it get? DUD

WWF Unbelievable ad

The Headshrinkers v Steve Nixon and Tony Bithera: Vince makes repeated claims that ‘those who ride Airforce One’ will be watching RAW this Monday night. Seems like such an odd claim/boast. Lawler makes all kinds of jokes about Bret Hart on commentary, so Savage tells him to “make like a tree and leave.” Wait, is that the actual joke, or are you actually supposed to say ‘leaf?’ Fatu with a flying splash at 2:48. ¼*

Fowler is back with another Face to Face, with guests the Smoking Gunns. This was a really terrible deal, sounding more like a local news anchor trying to interview two wrestlers for a fluff piece than a WWF promo

Razor Ramon and Rick Martel offer thoughts ahead of their clash for the WWF Intercontinental title this Monday night

BUExperience: I didn’t particularly enjoy this week’s episode, with no big angles, matches, or even developments.
