NWA (WCW) Power Hour (August 3, 1990)

Original Airdate: August 3, 1990 (taped July 25)

From Gainesville, Georgia; Your Host is Jim Ross

Tommy Rich v Sgt. Buddy Lee Parker: Rich split screens in here, noting that he has no fear of Stan Hansen. Okay, noted. Didn’t know we were taking a pole. Parker wrenches on a headlock for a good long while to start, until Rich fights him off, and grabs a toehold. Parker gets the ropes, and goes back to the headlock again. Rich fights out using a kneebreaker, and grabs a spinning toehold, leading Ross to go on a rant about how the move is misnamed, since it doesn’t really impact the toe. That’s the kind of hard hitting commentary we come to the Power Hour for! Parker escapes, and delivers an elbowdrop for two, then grabs a chinlock. Well, at least it’s not another headlock. Parker with a running powerslam for two, and a kneedrop leads to another chinlock. We’re lockin’ chin, baby! A criss cross sees Rich try a bodypress, but Parker hits the deck, and Tommy wipes out. Parker tries a gutwrench suplex, but Rich blocks, and corner whips him. Rich snapmares him out and into a chinlock, and then dives off the middle with a Thesz press at 10:13. This got a lot of time for a match so dull. ½*

The Samoan Swat Team v Mark White and Lee Scott: This also aired on the August 4 episode of Pro. The Swat Team make short work of these jobbers at 1:37. DUD

Sid Vicious v Scotty Williams: Aired on the August 4 episode of World Wide Wrestling. Sid switching to the short tights was such a massive improvement to his look that it can’t be overstated. He just doesn’t look like a star in the singlet. Lex Luger shows up in the aisle here, glaring at Vicious. Sid with a helicopter powerbomb, then a standard powerbomb at 1:48. DUD

Ross catches up with Tim Horner, who is so ready for Bam Bam Bigelow later, that he’s practically giddy. Apparently, he’s going to try offering Bigelow cake as a distraction? Seems like a sound strategy

Brian Pillman and Tom Zenk v Fred Avery and Joe Cazana: Also aired on the August 4 World Wide. Nothing much here, as Pillman and Zenk just overwhelm their jobbers with combo after combo, before Tom puts it away at 2:23. ¼*

Jim Cornette hosts the Louisville Slugger, with guests Ric Flair and Sid Vicious, and Jim immediately absolves them of any blame in what happened to Lex Luger last week.

Bam Bam Bigelow v Tim Horner: I always thought Bigelow being paired with Oliver Humperdink was a bad, shonehorned situation in the WWF, and I’m surprised that the pairing carried over to another promotion. And they did it on both sides of the heel/face line, too! One thing I wish did carry over is Bigelow’s far superior WWF gear, because this outfit is terrible, and makes him look very much ‘less than.’ Bigelow powers him around for a bit, until Tim gets a wristlock on. Bam Bam escapes, and they posture a little, into a test-of-strength. Bigelow dominates, but Horner is able to escape into another wristlock. Horner tries a sunset flip, but Bam Bam blocks, though Tim is able to dodge Bigelow’s splash. Tim forces him into a chase, and clobbers the winded Bigelow as they head in, then Tim dives with a 2nd rope dropkick. Bigelow doesn’t go down, so Horner goes to the middle with a second dive, but here’s Oliver with a distraction. That allows Bigelow to nail him, and a headbutt drop connects. Another headbutt knocks Horner to the outside, and Bigelow suplex-slams him back in, setting up a headbutt drop for two. Bam Bam works a headvice from there, wearing Horner down for a few two counts. Clothesline, but Horner ducks. He rebounds with a bodypress, but Bam Bam catches him, and slams him. That sets up a pair of headbutt drops, but a big punch misses, and Tim gets fiery on him. A bodypress misses, however, and Bigelow lands a headbutt drop for the pin at 10:22. Man, he was spamming those headbutts. Pretty boring, but not terrible. ¾*

BUExperience: Man, this episode breezed by.
