WWF Superstars (August 14, 1993)

Original Airdate: August 14, 1993 (taped July 26)

From Utica, New York; Your Hosts are Vince McMahon, Randy Savage, and Jerry Lawler

Razor Ramon v Duane Gill: Razor wearing the red/white/blue wristbands in support of Lex Luger is out of character, and a mistake. Ted DiBiase split screens in as Razor works Gill over, fuming at Ramon over Ted loss to 1-2-3 Kid, as well as Ramon snubbing his offer to be his cleaning person. Or whatever role that offer was supposed to be for. Razor’s Edge finishes at 2:06. ¼*

Gorilla Monsoon is in the control center with Update, and once again it’s all Lex Luger focused, with more clips of his Lex Express tour, plus the contract signing from last Monday’s RAW. Poor Savage looked like such a hanger-on out there, you could see how badly he wanted to be the guy in Lex’s spot

Ludvig Borga v Mike Khoury: Lawler makes a joke about how much Luger was sweating during the contract signing, and my goodness, they all were! That building looked like it probably didn’t have any air conditioning. Borga with a jumping clothesline at 2:07. DUD

Gene Okerlund is in the studio with Face to Face, with guests Harvey Wippleman and Razor Ramon. Harvey isn’t nervous about what a Rest in Peace match entails, since Giant Gonzalez is ready for anything. Meanwhile, I really dig how Razor didn’t change his gimmick much at all just because he’s a babyface now, which makes those wristbands he was wearing earlier even more out of place

The Steiner Brothers v Glen Ruth and Mike Bell: The WWF Tag Team title is not on the line here. Jim Cornette and the Heavenly Bodies split screen in to hype up their title shot at SummerSlam, as they just brush past the final cage match blowoff with Money Inc, and on to the Bodies as the next challengers. Steiner Screwdriver knocks Ruth silly, and the flying bulldog combo finishes at 2:58. ¼*

Jim Duggan music video. Was every song on that album just the same two or three words on a loop? I mean, they’re all fairly catchy, but there’s no variety whatsoever

Shawn Michaels v Darren Trujillo: The WWF Intercontinental title is not on the line here. The last episode of Wrestling Challenge also saw a Shawn squash follow a Steiner squash, interestingly. We get another split screen here, this time with Mr. Perfect, as we get into really pushing SummerSlam. Meanwhile, Michaels is looking noticeably pudgy at this point. Superkick finishes at 1:46. ¼*

Tatanka v Fred Williams: We’re getting some odd jobbers mixed in with the usual guys this week. Bam Bam Bigelow gives us another split screen for this one, as Tatanka polishes Williams off with Samoan drop at 1:50. DUD

Gene is in the studio with the SummerSlam Report. Nothing of note this week

The Heavenly Bodies v Bert Centeno and Rich Meyers: They’re selling the tag title match for SummerSlam with the concept that the Bodies are mysterious, and the Steiner’s may not have enough time to scout them. Not anything huge, but at least it’s something, and it’s logical. And speaking of the Brothers, they split screen in with a promo as well. Jimmy Del Ray with a flying moonsault press at 2:03. The Bodies were looking good here, bringing some interesting combos to the table. ½*

Gene is in the studio with another Face to Face, with guests WWF Champion Yokozuna and Lex Luger. Okay, now we’re talking! Sadly, nothing of note actually said

BUExperience: Another not especially interesting episode, as they continue hard selling SummerSlam, but there’s very little actually going on to develop the show aside from promos.
