WWF Superstars (August 7, 1993)

Original Airdate: August 7, 1993 (taped July 6)

From Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania; Your Hosts are Vince McMahon, Randy Savage, and Jerry Lawler

Fans outside the building are enlisting in Lex Luger’s Call to Action campaign. And I’m guessing exactly none of them realized they were ‘enlisting’ for years of merchandise catalogs clogging up their mailboxes

The Smoking Gunns v Well Dunn: This is Well Dunn's debut. Billy Gunn and Timothy Well start, and Billy wins the initial exchange, and uses a bunch of takedowns into an armbar. Tag to Bart Gunn, so Well goes to the eyes, and tags Steve Dunn - who promptly gets clotheslined. Bart armdrags him into an armbar, but Dunn fights to a vertical base, so Bart bodyslams him a couple of times. That draws Well in with a cheap shot, and the heels finally manage to take control. They work over Bart, and Tim somehow managed to get busted open hardway in this nothing match. Tandem bulldog gets the heels two, and Well delivers a belly-to-belly suplex for two. Dunn with a 2nd rope axehandle, but a clothesline misses, and Bart manages to block a bodypress with one of his own. That allows the hot tag to Billy, and Roseanne Barr the door! Well Dunn manage a combo, but Bart cuts them off before they can put it away, and the Gunn finish Dunn with their backdrop/piledriver combo at 3:56. Not a particularly interesting match, but introducing a new JTTS team for the stars to beat was welcome. *

Gorilla Monsoon is in the control center with Update, and he’s really bent out of shape at how Ted DiBiase has been trying to embarrass Razor Ramon. I mean, he can do a fine job of that himself, thanks. This led to Razor showing up during Ted’s match with 1-2-3 Kid on Wrestling Challenge last week, costing Ted the match to embarrass him

Adam Bomb v Chaz Ware: Vince informs Lawler that he and Savage are interviewing for a new broadcast partner, since Jerry’s probably going to be dead after SummerSlam. Not quite, but maybe keep some of those applications handy anyway. I mean, you never know. Adam with a powerbomb at 2:10. Bomb was fine in these limited matches, and he looked physically impressive. I still don’t get how Vince never tried to do more with him. ¼*

Gene Okerlund is in the studio with Face to Face, with guests Ted DiBiase and Razor Ramon, and Razor is offended that Ted offered him a job, since he’s done plenty of work with his hands, but he only does it for himself, not for money. Good financial strategy

Doink the Clown v Joey Maggs: Maggs actually has the gall to attack from behind to kick start the match, and he gets to show some fire for twenty second before Doink starts taking him apart. Doink works the leg, before finishing with the Whoopie Cushion at 1:35. Would it have killed him to use the stump puller there? ¼*

Gene is in the studio with the SummerSlam Report, and the card is really coming together at this point, though still not a word about anything to do with the tag title. And with both members of Money Inc now officially announced in singles action, there’s no clear direction

Tito Santana v Barry Hardy: Lawler wonders how long Tito’s been around at this point, to which Vince replies “long time.” “A lot longer than you’ll be around the WWF,” replies Savage, which in 1993 definitely seemed like it would prove true. Of all people, who honestly expected Lawler to stick around for decades? And he didn’t even get around to working at WrestleMania until some eighteen years into his run! Tito with El Paso at 2:21. This was Santana's final TV match in the WWF, and he wrestled his final match for the promotion, period, a few days after this aired (on August 13 in Wildwood New Jersey). DUD

Who is Lex Luger? Let him tell you! These segments were a good idea, considering how abrupt the babyface turn was

Bastion Booger v Mike Bell: Booger was such a one note gimmick, but give them credit, they played that note with all their hearts. Booger with a sitdown splash at 2:07. DUD

Gene is back with another Face to Face, this time with Tatanka, Bam Bam Bigelow, and Luna Vachon. Tatanka is still fuming about that whole haircut deal, and is looking for revenge at SummerSlam… in a six-man tag

BUExperience: Not much of note this week, though it’s interesting to watch the roster continue to turn over, with a large influx of new guys over the last few months (even if most of them never got beyond JTTS status).
