Original Airdate: September 6, 1986 (taped August 31)
From Atlanta, Georgia; Your Hosts are Tony Schiavone and David Crockett
Jim Cornette is out right away, to get his weekly ranting out of the way
Buddy Landel and Bill Dundee v Rocky King and Johnnie Cook: Landel with a figure four at 4:42. This felt very long. DUD
NWA United States Champion Nikita Koloff and Ivan Koloff are out, and they want to claim the United States Tag Team title as their next act, to cover all their US bases
Dusty Rhodes and Magnum TA are out, looking like they just stumbled out of a strip club after an all nighter. They’re ‘America’s Team,’ so they want the US tag title as well. Did we vote for these guys?
Ron Garvin and Dick Murdoch v Brodie Chase and Alan Martin: Garvin with his knockout punch for the pin at 4:35. Afterwards, Ron and Dick swing by the desk, and wouldn’t ya know it, they want the US tag title! DUD
Wahoo McDaniel v Lee Peek: The NWA National title is not on the line here. McDaniel with a butterfly suplex at 3:00. He didn’t finish with the chop? Was he trying to impress someone, or something? DUD
The Rock 'n' Roll Express v Phil Brown and Ray Aaron: The NWA World Tag Team title is not on the line for this. Poor Ricky and Robert… they worked so hard to become the champions, and suddenly all anyone can talk about are those shiny, new US belts. The Express with stereo dropkicks at 3:50. DUD
NWA World Champion Ric Flair is out with Baby Doll, and man, if he spent every dime he made on the lifestyle, you can’t say it wasn’t well worth it. There’s a reason people loved watching this dude. Flair runs down half the roster in hilarious fashion, with Doll making snide remarks insulting various peoples’ manhood along the way. This was fun
The Road Warriors v Art Pritts and Darrin Evans: The Warriors are good and pissed after Baby Doll called them ‘all show and no go,’ and kill these poor jobbers with a big clothesline from Animal at 1:04. Afterwards, the Warriors swing by the desk, throwing their hats in the ring for the US tag title tournament as well. This whole promotion needs to study that Warren Buffett quote about fear and greed. DUD
Tully Blanchard is out to talk shit about Dusty Rhodes
The Kansas Jayhawks v Arn Anderson and Ole Anderson: JJ Dillon sits in on commentary for this one. Dutch Mantel starts with Arn, and they posture. Dutch gets a standing side-headlock on, so Arn forces a criss cross, but loses to a hiptoss. Tag to Bobby Jaggers, and he works Arn’s arm. The Jayhawks take turns working the part, but a punch knocks Arn into his home corner, and he passes to Ole. Ole puts Mantel in an overhead wristlock, but Dutch counters to a hammerlock, so Ole gets himself into the ropes. That leads to a slugfest, won by Mantel, and he adds a turnbuckle smash. Tag to Jaggers, but he fails to cut the ring in half, and Arn gets a tag in. Arn throws shots, but Jaggers sends him into the babyface corner for a quick double team with Mantel. The Jayhawks go back to work on Arn’s arm, and Dutch delivers an atomic drop ahead of a schoolboy for two. More arm work as they cut the ring in half, but Jaggers makes a mistake, and the Horsemen turn it around. They work Bobby’s arm now, until Mantel gets the hot tag, and runs wild. A bodypress on Arn gets two when Ole saves, and Roseanne Barr the door! The Horsemen get hold of JJ’s shoe, and knock Mantel silly with it, but the referee sees it, and calls for the DQ at 10:59. This was fine, but they spent forever on the arm stuff, and it kind of dragged after a while. *
The Russians are back out, promising to divide and conquer the American teams in the US tag title tournament
Wahoo McDaniel is back out, and he seems to think his National title is the second highest ranked belt in the promotion, and not the US title, and therefore he should have a shot at the world title before Nikita Koloff. I always thought the US title was the #2, but admittedly, I’m not as familiar with the hierarchy from this period
Nikita Koloff v Randy Barber: I doubt this lasts for over a minute. The NWA United States title is not on the line, and Wahoo does commentary for it. Nikita with the Sickle at 2:24. I’m shocked this went on for that long. DUD
Jim Crockett comes out to try and work out the US v National debate, and suggests a unification match to settle it. I like this angle
Tully Blanchard and Jimmy Garvin v Mike Rose and Henry Rutley: Well, this is a random combination. Dillon sits in on commentary for this one. Garvin with a brainbuster at 6:35. DUD
Warlord v Jack Weathers: Warlord still has Baby Doll in his corner despite her heel turn, so I guess he’s a heel now? Warlord with a running powerslam at 0:40. Afterwards, Warlord and Doll swing by the desk, and she clarifies that her relationship with Ric Flair has nothing to do with her business with Warlord. She threatens to take Warlord to Central States to let him run wild over there for a while. DUD
Cornette is back, still crying about being ‘robbed’ of the NWA World Tag Team title. Well, at least someone still cares about those belts
BUExperience: You can’t say they didn’t do a good job of building up the new US tag belts, that much is for sure.
