WWF Superstars (August 3, 1996)

Original Airdate: August 3, 1996 (taped July 23)

From Yakima, Washington; Your Hosts are Vince McMahon, Jim Ross, and Mr. Perfect

The Smoking Gunns v Matt Farmer and Adrian Lester: The Godwinns and Hillbilly Jim are out to do commentary here, making this a ridiculous six-man booth. The WWF Tag Team title is not on the line here. The Gunns with a combo at 2:35. I don’t dislike the Gunns as heels, I just wish they had more to work with. DUD

Dok Hendrix is in the studio for the SummerSlam Slam Jam, man

Marc Mero v Who: Perfect and Ross do ‘Who’s on First’ almost word for word here, since that’s what they do. Meanwhile, Goldust’s usher comes out to bring Sable another gift, but Sable refuses it. Goldust himself then split screens in, and Marlena continues to make a play for Sable - though it’s not clear if she wants Sable for herself or for Goldust. Either was is pretty risque for the New Generation era of the promotion. Mero with a cradle at 3:22. DUD

TL Hopper v Barry Horowitz: Vince notes that this is the one year anniversary of Horowitz getting his first win, which allows Perfect to get a funny line in about how Barry’s career has gone ‘straight down the crapper.’ Definitely some truth behind that joke. Meanwhile, Vince seems almost breathless as he describes that Hopper might put his feces covered plunger in peoples’ face against their will. There were signs. Hopper with a belly-to-belly suplex at 2:46. “TL Hopper may be on his way to SummerSlam,” notes McMahon. No longer the buyrate was in the toilet. DUD

SummerSlam ad

Kevin Kelly brings Sycho Sid to do a general hype interview for his SummerSlam match with Davey Boy Smith. Nothing here at all, it was boilerplate

The Stridex Slam of the Week is Sid chokeslamming Justin Hawk Bradshaw on RAW

The Bodydonnas v Randy Taylor and Suwio: The New Rockers are out to do commentary, as they continue to do their best to make the tag team division seem hot and exciting, despite having all of, what, four teams? Skip with a rana off the top at 2:12. DUD

Bret Hart ‘You Start the Fire’ music video. Kind of random, considering we haven’t even seen Bret on TV since WrestleMania

Freddie Joe Floyd is ready for Uncle Zebekiah

Uncle Zebekiah v Freddie Joe Floyd: Zeb attacks before the bell, but Floyd fights him off, and hooks a schoolboy at 0:10. Well, he did just say he was ready. Afterwards, Zeb complains that he wasn’t ready, and demands to continue. Floyd is game, and hits a bodypress right away at 1:14 total. Zeb still feels robbed, and offers Floyd $5,000 to get back in for another round. What is this, the SummerSlam main event? So, Floyd takes him up on it, and kicks his ass again, but Bradshaw runs in for the DQ this time at 2:14 total. Savio Vega makes the save afterwards. DUD

Dok is back with another Slam Jam

Davey Boy Smith v Savio Vega: Owen Hart is out to continue the trend of guest commentators. A criss cross to start, won by Vega with a monkey flip. He uses a hiptoss and an armdrag into an armbar, but Bulldog whips him into the ropes to escape, and throws a knee. Davey with a cross corner whip, followed by a hanging vertical suplex for two. A bodyslam sets up a legdrop, but Vega dodges, and covers for two. Vega with chops in the corner, but a cross corner charge misses, and Smith puts the boots to him for two. Chinlock, but Vega escapes, and throws a bodypress for two. Smith cuts him off with a clothesline, but a charge in the corner misses, and Vega backdrops him for two. Vega with a rollup for two, so Jim Cornette distracts him, and Davey capitalizes with the running powerslam at 4:18. *

BUExperience: A very dull episode this week.
