NWA (JCP) World Championship Wrestling (March 7, 1987)

Original Airdate: March 7, 1987

From Atlanta, Georgia; Your Hosts are Tony Schiavone and David Crockett

Ivan Koloff, Vladimir Petrov, and Dick Murdoch are out, and Dick looks so goofy standing next to them in a polo short and trucker hat. And I know that’s part of the idea, but it just comes off as odd. Not to mention the fact that he wears a shirt with no pants, which is only appropriate with cartoon characters. And, even then, only certain cartoon characters

Lex Luger v Rocky King: Lex truly looks like a star, and it’s really no surprise that everywhere he went, promoters tried to build around him at some point. Lex with the torture rack at 2:52. Afterwards, Lex swings by the desk with JJ Dillon, since he’s getting the full Horsemen treatment now. DUD

Shaska Whatley is out, ranting and raving in a top hat

The MOD Squad v George South and Mitch Snow: That’s one bulky, Officer Farva looking motherfucker. MOD with the pin at 3:24. DUD

Tony reports from Sabatino’s (an Italian restaurant in Baltimore Maryland), where they’re holding a meeting to announce the seeding for the Crockett Cup tournament

Mike Rotundo v Thunderfoot I: This is Mike’s TV return to the promotion, less than a month after his last WWF match. Mike with an airplane spin at 3:30. Afterwards, he swings by the desk, and is joined there by Tim Horner, so you know he’s going right to the top of the promotion. DUD

Bill Dundee brings MOD Squad back out so they can continue Farva’ing

Arn Anderson v Mike Jackson: Arn is doing some great facial expressions here, and he puts Jackson away with a rotating spinebuster at 5:04. Too long. ¼*

The Horsemen are out, and they’re fuming about Ole Anderson

NWA Junior Heavyweight Title Match: Denny Brown v Lazer Tron: Tron looks like too big of a guy for this division, they should have made a go with him as a ‘regular’ guy (it’s Hector Guerrero under a mask). Lazer dominates early, and a dropkick gets him two. A butterfly suplex is worth two, and he grounds the champion in an armbar from there. Brown fights back with a backdrop for one, and he tries to take it to the mat, but Lazer is too fast for him, and holds a headscissors. Brown uses the tights to furnish an escape, and he bails to break the momentum. Back in, Brown slugs at him, but Lazer absorbs the blows, and delivers a backdrop to set up a legdrop for two. Brown fights back again, but misses a kneedrop, and Lazer slaps on a figure four. Brown makes the ropes, but the leg is in a bad way, and Lazer stays on it. Lazer tries for a Boston crab, but Brown is able to block, and grabs a standing headlock. Lazer quickly escapes, but a criss cross results in Brown shoulderblocking him. That allows Denny a hanging vertical suplex for two, but a criss cross allows Lazer to tag him with a jumping forearm to win the title at 10:36. Solid work here. * ¼

Jim Cornette, the Midnight Express and Big Bubba Rogers are out, and they look like they’re auditioning for a spot in the Hart Foundation this week

NWA World Tag Team Champions Rick Rude and Manny Fernandez are out, and Rick’s chain is in full rap star mode this week, damn

Jimmy Valiant v Tommy Angel: Valiant, ever the class act, has ‘kiss my’ printed on the seat of his tights. Jimmy with an elbowdrop at 1:10. DUD

Barbarian is out with Bill Dundee, who apparently is going to be a big time manager now?

Barbarian v Randy Mulkey: Barbarian eats him alive, and finishes with a flying headbutt drop at 2:22. This was a bit too long for the point it was trying to make. ¼*

NWA United States Champion Nikita Koloff and Dusty Rhodes are out for their weekly reminder that they’re still important around here

Wahoo McDaniel and Baron von Raschke v Randy Barber and Rick Sullivan: Here’s a weird ass team if there ever was one. Baron with the claw at 2:52. Afterwards, Baron swings by, thinking that Jim Cornette made a big mistake by lighting a fire under Ron Garvin. I did get a kick out of Baron pronouncing ‘mistake’ as ‘mistook.’ DUD

Six-Man Tag Team Match: Ivan Koloff, Dick Murdoch, and Vladimir Petrov v Alan Martin, Zane Smith, and Cougar Jay: Petrov with the sickle at 4:27. DUD

Barry Windham v Chance McQuade: Barry with the jumping clothesline at 1:28. Afterwards, Windham swings by to talk about the Crockett Cup, where he’s getting a chance to challenge Ric Flair for the world title. DUD

Brad Armstrong is out, and he’s been training, ready to take the NWA Television title from Tully Blanchard

Ron Garvin and Jimmy Garvin v Larry Stephens and Darrell Dalton: It’s kind of weird that Ron and Windham are the NWA United States Tag Team champions, but Ron is busy teaming with Jimmy, and Barry is off chasing Flair’s title. Not bad (I like it when guys have multiple threads), just kind of weird. Ron with a punch at 3:57. Afterwards, the Garvins talk about their night dreams. DUD

BUExperience: I kept having to check that I didn’t miss a week, because it feels like so much has happened since the last show.
