WWF Superstars (May 7, 1994)

Original Airdate: May 7, 1994 (taped April 13)

From Rochester, New York; Your Hosts are Vince McMahon and Jerry Lawler

King of the Ring Tournament Qualifying Match: Scott Steiner v Irwin R Schyster: IRS with an atomic drop right away, but Scott no-sells, and hiptosses him. Scott adds a bodyslam and a butterfly suplex, so Schyster bails. Scott hops out to feed him the steps, but IRS takes a cheap shot on the way back in, and he takes control of things. Criss cross allows Steiner a pair of dropkicks, and an overhead suplex gets him two. Scott grabs an armbar from there, but Irwin makes the ropes, so Steiner suplexes him for two. Headlock, but IRS rolls into a few cradle attempts, but can’t get beyond ‘two.’ He tries using the ropes for leverage, but still can’t score the pin, so he forces a criss cross, and throws a knee. That allows him an elbowdrop, but Scott dodges, and goes back to the armbar. Scott shifts to a headscissors for a few pin attempts, but Schyster kicks out at two each time, so Scott tries an abdominal stretch instead, and he even uses the ropes for leverage. That’s a weird move for a white meat WWF babyface in 1994. I like it! Schyster goes to the eyes to escape, but hits a boot while trying a charge, and Scott unloads a ten-punch count. Sunset flip, but Schyster reverses - only to get busted using the ropes at two. Scott tries another cradle, but IRS reverses, and uses the ropes again without the referee noticing - this time for the pin at 7:48. Afterwards, Rick Steiner runs out to try and alert the official to the leverage, but it goes nowhere. Tatanka comes out to try beating Irwin up, but that goes nowhere either, as Schyster bails into the crowd to get away. This was the last appearance of the Steiner Brothers on WWF TV, though Scott would eventually return in late 2002. Solid match to go out on. ** ¼

Todd Pettengill is in the studio for the King of the Ring Report, which still has a fantastic theme. The only announcement this week is that Jerry Lawler will face Roddy Piper at the show, which leads to some of Piper’s rambling home video style promos

1-2-3 Kid v Jason Storm: We get a fan doing the ring announcing here, and Lawler is just brutal to the poor woman doing the deed. Kid shows some nice speed here, before finishing with a spinheel kick at 2:07. Did they ever settle on a proper finisher for Kid? What was wrong with the moonsault? ¼*

On the WrestleMania Revenge Tour, Ted DiBiase introduces Nikolai Volkoff as his newest acquisition, since Nikolai is broke, and willing to humiliate himself for the cash. This whole thing felt like a setup for another Virgil-like breakup angle, but instead, Volkoff just sort of joined DiBiase as a heel. This bit was actually from the next batch of Superstars tapings on April 27 in Albany New York. So odd that the shows from this set haven’t even finished airing, and they already have another taping in the can that goes all the way into June.

Owen Hart v John Paul: What was with Vince and specifically referring to it as the ‘worldwide’ WrestleMania Revenge tour with every single mention of it? Owen with the Sharpshooter at 1:43. DUD

Stan Lane presents Live Event News, with highlights of the WrestleMania Revenge Tour. No mention of how worldwide it is or isn’t, sadly

Lex Luger v Barry Hardy: Vince notes that Luger is not only the ultimate role model for all American kids, but for all kids around the world. Man, of all the guys to force that kind of role on, Luger is just the dirt worst choice. He’s such an introvert, and Vince is putting him over like he likes nothing more than interacting with fans. Meanwhile, Vince also announces that Mr Perfect has bailed on his contractual obligations, and thus Lex will be facing Crush instead at an arena near you. As someone who has seen some of those matches, that was no treat. And they were all, like, twenty minutes long, too. Luger with the torture rack at 2:28. DUD

Jeff Jarrett v Derek Domino: Vince wishes his mom the most halfhearted ‘happy Mother’s Day’ of all time here. But, given some of the things he talked about in interviews over the years, maybe that’s understandable. Jeff with the figure four at 1:48. DUD

Meanwhile, some kids at a daycare somewhere report seeing Undertaker lurking around outside their classroom window. That’s two weeks in a row that he’s been spotted loitering around playgrounds and such. I’m not getting a good feeling about this angle

BUExperience: I dug the feature match, and the rest was fine, too.
