WWF Superstars (September 3, 1994)

Original Airdate: September 3, 1994 (taped August 17)

From Portland, Maine; Your Hosts are Vince McMahon and Jerry Lawler

Lex Luger v Tim McNeany: The jobber, clearly trying to take advantage of Luger’s diminished mental state after SummerSlam, actually attacks from behind. Unfortunately for him, this was taped before SummerSlam took place, so Lex easily fights him off. Funny to hear Lawler mock Luger for ‘choking’ at SummerSlam. Dude, that one’s just scratching the surface. Not even top ten for Lex. Luger with the torture rack at 0:58. DUD

Live Event News covers the Undertaker coming for Yokozuna for revenge. Kind of weird that we’re not even acknowledging the whole two Undertakers thing, and just casually moving on like it was a Wrestling Challenge feature match, after weeks and weeks of build and intrigue

We flashback to December 1983, when Iron Sheik defeated Bob Backlund for the WWF Title, despite Bob never submitting

Bob Backlund v Bert Centeno: We get a fan doing the ring announcing for this one, and Backlund chides him for not calling him ‘mister.’ This was a great character. Bob snaps, and wrecks him with the crossface chickenwing at 2:46. They did a phenomenal job of getting that hold over as terrifying in very short order. DUD

Todd Pettengill is in the studio for the SummerSlam Report, and at least we’re acknowledging the two Undertakers thing, even if just very, very briefly

Owen Hart v Scott Taylor: Taylor looks so small, that Owen looks like a legit hoss beside him. Kind of hard to believe that he ever got an actual push in this promotion, he definitely way over delivered on any expectations. Hart with the Sharpshooter at 3:58. Owen was game to go back-and-forth with him here. ½*

The Smoking Gunns v The Heavenly Bodies: Cornette runs his mouth before the bell, so the Gunns go after him, but the Bodies attack from behind, and stomp their hats! Oh shit. The Gunns lose their minds and tear them limb from limb, and there’s no match. Well, fair. I wouldn’t want to get in there with two guys so tightly wound that they lose it that over a couple of Stetsons. Though, they are called the ‘Gunns,’ shouldn’t come as any surprised that they’re easily triggered

1-2-3 Kid v Roy Raymond: Abe Knuckleball Schwartz shows up in the crowd with his ‘strike’ sign during this one. Kid with a flying legdrop at 3:12. Another competitive outing. ½*

Irwin R Schyster v Phil Apollo: Talking about the surprise tag title switch, Vince notes that the Headshrinkers aren’t even focused on the belts, but on revenge. Well, maybe they should stay a little more focused on the belts, then. IRS with the STF at 2:50. DUD

Live Event News is a look at Jim Neidhart’s return, building him up as the new big challenger for WWF Champion Bret Hart. I’m not sure if they ever intended it to go beyond the house shows, but luckily they went with Backlund for Survivor Series

BUExperience: A pretty solid episode this week, as they did a good job of covering SummerSlam fallout, despite the episode being in the can for weeks.
