NWA (WCW) Power Hour (September 14, 1990)

Original Airdate: September 14, 1990 (taped September 3)

From Gainesville, Georgia; Your Hosts are Jim Ross and Paul E. Dangerously

Terry Taylor v Barry Horowitz: Ross is very excited that we have two Floridians in the ring. I’m excited that we have two jobbers who reached for the stars. Taylor with a jumping forearm at 4:35. DUD

Dan Spivey is happy to be back in WCW. From a Whitesnake concert, by the looks of him. Though, honestly, I have no idea what Whitesnake dressed like, I couldn’t pick them out of a lineup. Maybe Poison? Don’t really know them, either. I have good taste in music. Just, whatever your favorite 80s hair metal band was. He looks like he came from one of their concerts

Dan Spivey v Lou Perez: This is Spivey's first TV match for the promotion since Clash of the Champions X back in February. Dan with the powerbomb at 2:55. Welcome back! DUD

Bob Caudle is in the studio for Wrestling News Network, and we get a look at a locker room confrontation between NWA World Tag Team Champions Doom and Ric Flair/Arn Anderson

Caudle catches up with Brian Pillman to talk about his strategy for running the gauntlet this weekend

The Rock 'n' Roll Express v Mike Thor and JD Wolfe: The Express with the same tired, old squash they were wrestling in 1986 at 5:37. Too long, too. DUD

The Fabulous Freebirds v Pat Rose and Zan Panzer: The Freebirds with the win at 4:34, when Jimmy Garvin delivers the DDT. DUD

Jim Cornette hosts the Louisville Slugger, with guest Sid Vicious. Sid things Sting should spend less time worrying about the Black Scorpion, because he’s coming for the world title

Running the Gauntlet Round One Match: Brian Pillman v Tim Horner: They feel each other out to start, as the announcers discuss the concept of the gauntlet, and it’s such a great, easy concept, and I have no idea why it didn’t last forever and why the WWF never stole it. Especially now, in the content era, it feels like the perfect sort of thing to add some stakes. A criss cross allows Pillman a sleeper, and he cradles out of it for two. A backslide gets the sudden pin at 7:30. I was not at all expecting a pin there, most of the match was just feeling out stuff, and then suddenly we’re going into the finish. ½*

BUExperience: A pretty skippable episode, though I love the concept of the gauntlet, and I’m excited they’re finally moving forward with it.
