WWE Network Collections: Hidden Gems (September 2016)

I’m not going to go through everything they added (as cool as it is to have Lou Thesz matches from the 50s, and NWA Title defenses from the 60s up, that stuff is so far before my time that it’s almost a different sport, and I have little interest in reviewing it), but whatever I consider pertinent

While I’m skipping the Last Battle in Atlanta, it’s really cool that the footage was found (and, according to the WWE’s own archivist, apparently they had it all along, at the end of a random Omni tape that no one had bothered to categorize since they acquired the rights to it in 2001), and is available on demand to subscribers. I’m just not bothering with a formal review because the match itself isn’t anything particularly special, but it’s certainly worth checking out for the historical significance

AWA SuperClash II (May 1987)

Original Airdate: May 2, 1987

From San Francisco, California; Your Host is Ron Trongard. Unlike WrestleRock the year before, the AWA wisely switched back to an arena this year, instead of running a half full stadium again. Unfortunately, they’re still overshooting the mark, as they only managed to draw a laughable 2,800 for this show, which would have been more at home at a high school gym. How the mighty have fallen...

AWA WrestleRock (April 1986)

Original Airdate: April 20, 1986

From Minneapolis, Minnesota; Your Host is Ron Trongard. This show has kind of a weird look to it, as they drew a large crowd (23,000) but since the venue (the Metrodome) could accommodate around 50,000, the crowd looks less impressive than it might had they run an arena instead of a stadium. Matters weren’t helped by the fact that they scaled the building poorly, and then made things even worse by pointing the hard camera towards a section with a ton of empty seats. Believe me, I know what I’m talking about... I’m a man with plenty of experience making things look bigger and more impressive than they actually are
